Who can submit?

MAN_AGE aims to provide a platform for men who otherwise find it difficult to share their experiences of mental health, physical health and the plurality of male identities. In the future we may offer space for non-males to share their experiences of these subjects, (from the “outside looking in”).

What can I submit?

We want to publish accounts of your experiences, however you best do that. So far, MAN_AGE supports written articles, illustrations and photography projects.

articles

How much should I write?

Typically, an initial goal would be for 1’000-1’500 words. This isn’t set in stone, however, as we realise differing stories are different lengths.

How do I format my submission?

Save as a word doc. with text at 11pt, in Calibri font.

We also accept working in Google Docs, if that’s your preference.

Can I publish anonymously?

Yes. Although we encourage people to attach their names, we understand that certain articles will need to be published anonymously.

Do I need to be careful who I mention in my account?

This depends on how they’re mentioned. We discourage naming people, businesses, organisations (etc) in your account, as this could be libelous.

Do I need to provide pictures alongside my article?

At this stage we do not require pictures with your article.

What can I expect from the “editing process”?

The editing process is nothing to be concerned about. We want your story to flow as a great piece of writing, with all the hallmarks of a well-written article, and so our editor will read your story and check for syntax, spelling and other grammatical concerns. All edits will be checked and approved by you before anything is published.

What can I write about?

Typically, we want to hear stories of perseverance amidst mental health struggles, past or present. When did you have a period of struggling mental health, and why? How did you overcome or mitigate the issue? What advice would you offer others in a similar position?

If in doubt, read the stories already published on MAN_AGE.

Do you only publish personal accounts?

We are also interested in scholarly articles exploring masculinity and male mental health - such as from a psychological, biological or historical perspective. Are you in one of those fields? Get in touch!

illustrations

What should I draw?

We’re after illustrations exploring male identity, male mental health and physical health struggles, and personal experiences. Feel free to contact us to discuss ideas.

What are the dimensions of the art? Any colour palette rules?

We want full page designs, no smaller than A4 (that’s US Letter size, to Americans). Please use only blues, yellows, greyscale and black and white, in keeping with the website’s colour scheme.

How many illustrations can I submit?

Anywhere between 2 to 5 illustrations would be great.

How should I format my images?

High resolution, preferably scanned [if traditional] or generated [if digital] at 600 dpi to retain quality and definition.

.jpegs and .PNGs are the best for us to upload. We are able to reduce file size, if you are unable.

Do I need to write anything?

Preferably we want a short description/title for each illustration, to give the reader context. We would also like a short bio about yourself.

Can I link to my website or social media?

Yes, of course! We encourage it!

photography

What should I photograph?

You can photograph either:

  1. Locations that were once bastions of male identity that now have lost funding (think industry, factories), or of emerging spaces replacing them (think the gym). Compare and contrast, or focus on one.

  2. Communities or subjects (with their consent!), exploring individual identities, or those forged by community.

How many photographs do you need for a submission?

Anywhere between 5 to 15 photographs would be great, but if a project is needs to be smaller or larger, we’re happy to accommodate.

How should I format my photographs?

Naturally, the higher the resolution and image size the better - if there are photos that we sadly cannot use, we will tell you.

.jpegs and .PNGs are the best for us to upload. We are able to reduce file size, if you are unable.

We prefer black and white photography, to keep in line with the website’s aesthetic.

Do I need to write anything?

Preferably we want a short 500-word introduction to your project/photographs, to give the reader context. We would also like a short bio about yourself.

Can I link to my website or social media?

Yes, of course! We encourage it!
